Children's Vision Evaluations
Good vision care needs to begin at youth.
Dr. Hayes stresses the importance of preventative vision care through thorough vision exams in early childhood. Vision provides a significant contribution to a child's ability to assimilate information presented in the classroom. In fact, over 80% of a child's sensory input to the brain is visual. However, one in four children have a visual disorder. There are many aspects of vision that must work properly in order to receive visual information efficiently. The most widely recognized visual skill is visual acuity, the ability to see "20/20." Blurred vision due to nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism can affect school performance. However, a less widely known fact is that a child may be able to see "20/20," but still may have visual difficulties that affect school performance.
Examples of symptoms that may be associated with visual dysfunctions:
Headaches with near work Skipping and rereading words Difficulty focussing from the board to paper Fatigue with reading Double vision Letter reversals Poor printing or handwriting
Visual symptoms can occur due to visual efficiency problems such as poor eye tracking, focusing problems, and difficulty using the eyes together as a team, and/or visual information processing difficulties such as reduced visual memory, poor eye-hand coordination, and difficulties with visually discriminating between objects. Weaknesses in these visual areas are obstacles that force a child to use excess mental effort to keep his or her eyes on task. This can make it difficult for the child to concentrate in the classroom and may affect comprehension skills or lead to extended periods to complete homework.
Children who have visual difficulties that contribute to learning problems may benefit from glasses or special lenses such as prism to relieve visual symptoms. Other visual problems may be best remediated by optometric vision therapy, an individualized program treatment program designed to improve visual function and performance. The benefits of optometric vision therapy, which include improved visual information processing and the ability to sustain visual function over time, can relieve visual symptoms and result in less discomfort and frustration with near work activities such as reading.
If you have questions or would like further information about pediatric optometry or vision therapy, please feel free to contact Dr. Hayes at the office.

Patient Testimonies
"Dr. Klein has provided my family with eye care and vision guidance for over three years. Each of us presents a unique set of problems, all of which he responds to with patience, compassion, and great success.
In my case, he literally changed my day-to-day life. I have worn glasses since grade school; over the years, I’ve tried to wear contact lenses because of my work and leisure interests, but to no avail. I believe that my goal was unattainable because I was not dealing with visionary professionals and because the technology had not yet matured.
Dr. Klein is a student of vision technology and, as such, is always aware of what’s new, what works, and what doesn’t work. At my first appointment, I told him that I couldn’t wear contacts and his response was, “Nonsense!”-- at which point he placed a high-tech contact lens on one of my eyes, and I have never looked back. Since that day, he has refined his selection of lenses and settings to fully address my needs--to the point where I can see better while wearing my contacts than when I’m wearing my glasses.
So, if you’re someone who thinks that you will never get used to wearing contact lenses, you just might be in for a big surprise!"
